Career path: AD vs AST vs FG

AD6 is an Administrator (AD) grade, covering policy development, legislative drafting, management, and senior specialist roles across the EU institutions. By contrast, AST grades (AST1-AST11) cover technical and administrative assistants, AST/SC grades cover secretarial and clerical support, and FG grades (FG I-IV) are Contract Agent fixed-term roles. AD careers run from AD5 (entry) to AD16 (Director-General).

About AD6 positions, requirements, and career path

What is a AD6 Position?

AD6 is the Administrator grade one step above the entry-level AD5. AD6 officials typically have two to four years of post-graduate professional experience and handle policy files independently, draft replies to parliamentary questions, prepare working documents for Council groups, and contribute substantively to legislative proposals. AD6 is also a common direct-recruitment grade at EU agencies for young professionals with a few years of relevant experience but who do not yet meet the higher AD7 threshold. The current AD6 basic monthly salary ranges from approximately EUR 5,565 to EUR 6,137 gross per month, before the expatriation allowance (16% of basic salary for staff who relocated to take up duty) and other entitlements. See /guide/correction-coefficients/ for how the salary is adjusted in non-Brussels duty stations.

How to Get a AD6 Position

Most AD6 officials reach the grade through promotion from AD5 after two to four years of service with consistent positive appraisals. Direct external recruitment at AD6 happens through EU agency vacancy notices that require a few years of relevant professional experience (typically three years post-graduate). EPSO occasionally runs AD6 specialist competitions for profiles such as junior lawyer-linguists, audit officers, and IT specialists. The CAST Permanent process recruits contract agents at FG IV which is functionally equivalent in tasks but distinct from the AD6 official career stream.

AD6 Career Progression

From AD6, promotion to AD7 typically takes another two to four years. The AD5 to AD9 range forms the bulk of the Administrator career stream, with regular promotions driven by the annual Article 45 exercise. Officials at AD6 are encouraged to seek mobility between units or DGs early in their career to broaden their experience before settling into a specialism. Stage in a Member of Cabinet team, a secondment to a member-state administration, or a posting to an EU Delegation through the EEAS can accelerate progression.

Requirements

A completed university degree of at least three years is required. For external direct recruitment, typically two to three years of relevant professional experience. Thorough knowledge of at least two EU official languages, with one at C1 and another at B2. Candidates must be nationals of an EU member state and enjoy full civic rights.
