English is the dominant working language across the European Union institutions and agencies. The vast majority of 588 live vacancies on this site can be applied to in English, and the day-to-day work is in English. The exceptions are narrow and called out below.
English is one of the three official working languages of the European Commission and the de facto lingua franca across nearly every institution and agency. Internal meetings, draft legislation, policy notes, technical documents, and inter-institutional communication are predominantly in English. You do not need to speak French to work for the EU; you do need a second EU official language at B2.
If English is your strongest language and your university degree was in English, you almost certainly clear the C1 bar. The second language is the practical question: a candidate with English C1 will often select French or German for the second-language test.
Showing the 18 most recently posted openings. Almost all can be applied to in English and have English as the working language; check the individual vacancy notice for the second-language requirement.

Yes. English, French, and German are the three official "working languages" of the European Commission and most other institutions. After the UK left the EU, English remained a working language (Ireland and Malta still have English as an official language; the EU also continues to use English as its dominant lingua franca internally). For day-to-day work in Brussels, Luxembourg and the agencies, English is sufficient. Meetings, internal emails, draft legislation and policy notes are produced in English in the vast majority of cases.
No, with narrow exceptions. The Council of the EU and the Court of Justice retain stronger French-language traditions, and EU institutions based in francophone duty stations (Luxembourg, Strasbourg) use more French informally. But the application process for almost all roles can be completed in English, the working language at most posts is English, and the EU staff requirement is "two official languages with the first at C1 and the second at B2". French is one option for the second language but not the only one.
You need a thorough knowledge of at least one EU official language (typically C1, often your mother tongue) and a satisfactory knowledge of a second (B2). For AD-grade competitions and most Temporary Agent posts, the second language must be English, French, or German because those are the institutions' working languages. Some specialised roles require additional language combinations (interpreters, lawyer-linguists, EU Delegations staff in non-English-speaking countries).
European Commission (especially DG CONNECT, DG CLIMA, DG GROW), European Central Bank (Frankfurt), European Investment Bank (Luxembourg), European External Action Service, and most decentralised agencies (Europol in The Hague, EMA in Amsterdam, ENISA in Athens, EUSPA in Prague, ECDC in Stockholm, EFSA in Parma, EUIPO in Alicante, ECHA in Helsinki, EUAA in Malta). The European Parliament is multilingual but English-dominant in committee work. The Council and the Court of Justice are the most French-leaning in working culture.
Generally no for permanent civil-servant, Temporary Agent and Contract Agent posts that require EU citizenship. There are some exceptions for short-term contracts, research positions, and EU agencies that occasionally open to UK candidates with valid EU residency rights. Always check the specific vacancy notice for nationality conditions.
Yes. EU Delegations in English-speaking jurisdictions (Dublin, Valletta) work primarily in English. Major EU duty stations like Brussels, Luxembourg, The Hague, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Helsinki, Athens, Frankfurt, Warsaw, Vienna and others all use English as the dominant institutional working language even though the local national language differs. Day-to-day life outside work is easier in cities where English is widely spoken, such as Amsterdam, Stockholm, Helsinki, Dublin, Valletta, The Hague, and Luxembourg.
Only if you select French as your second language for the application. EPSO competitions and most Temporary Agent selections include a language test at the assessment-centre stage; if your second language is English, German, or another EU language other than your first, you sit that test instead of French. The test format is computer-based (multiple-choice comprehension) plus an oral component for interviews.
